As part of the 2021 16 Days of Activism Newcastle Campaign, the Gender Research Network at the University of Newcastle seeks to raise awareness of violence against women and girls through music. We have compiled a playlist of 16 Songs that share the experiences and impacts of domestic violence from childhood to adulthood. These 16 Songs challenge listeners to start a conversation and take action to ending violence against women and girls. Our playlist showcases Australian, Indigenous Australian, and international artists’ evocative music on domestic violence. It features empowering hits, anthems and moving ballads that we all know and love.
These are our 16 Songs for 16 Days of Activism. What are yours?
There are so many songs that could have featured in our 16 Songs for 16 Days list that we have also created a “mistress” list of powerful, persuasive songs that challenge us to think about the consequences and damage of domestic and gendered violence.
Now it’s your turn – what are your 16 Songs for 16 Days of Activism? Compile your list and share it with your friends and family. And don’t forget to tag us #16DaysNewy
